The Summer Campus Visit

by Kathleen Martin, Kaplan Senior Pre-College Admissions Consultant

You might be imagining a summer that parallels Chevy Chase's Family Vacation, including an overloaded station wagon, overbearing nuggets of parental wisdom, and endless trips to college campuses. But have faith—with a little organization, you and your parents might actually enjoy the college visitation process.

A visit during the school year allows students to see the college while students are on campus, but busy family schedules don't always make this a possibility. Many families plan on going to colleges in the summer to begin the college process. Summer visits will let you see if a college is the right fit, academically and geographically. If necessary, you can go back in the fall to tour the college while classes are in session.

Planning

* Identify the colleges that interest you the most and sit down with your parents to draft a travel itinerary. Visiting more than two colleges per day may leave you with a blurred impression of stone, brick, and smiling faces, so pace yourself!
* Contact admissions offices to inquire about the availability of campus tours, information sessions, and interviews in the summer. These often occur at specific times each day.
* When you are scheduling your appointment, ask the receptionist to recommend a charming area bed and breakfast or inn. Experiencing the local hospitality will provide more insight about the area than a stay at the nearby hotel chain.
* Inquire about festivals or events held at or near the college in the summer. Combining a campus visit with a fun activity will make the trip much more enjoyable!

Preparation

* Before visiting a college, you should conduct some preliminary research on the college. Plan to read about your intended major(s), activities, and areas of interest. Jot down a few questions that you'd like to ask in an interview or information session. Questions about academics, internships, research, and admission are appropriate to ask admissions officers, while tour guides (usually students) are an excellent resource to learn more about residence halls and campus life.
* First impressions do matter, so wear "summer casual" clothing (for example, nice shorts and a polo shirt or a modest sundress). Your whole family should pack a comfortable pair of walking shoes, since campus tours may cover a lot of ground.
* Bring your driving directions, campus map, a pad and pen, questions about the college, and your hotel confirmation with you. Plan to allow extra time to arrive a bit early for your appointment—you can't present yourself well if you have to rush to the campus!

In the midst of visiting one campus after another, take the time to think about the transformation that college will bring. Travelling to campuses in the summer may also provide fond memories of your family's final road trip together.

Prep for College Admissions this Summer

Take advantage of your extra time this summer to get a head start on college life and prep for the SAT in a fun campus environment! Kaplan's comprehensive SAT prep will be featured at two of Education Unlimited's college admissions prep camps during Summer 2006: Summer Focus and College Admissions Prep Camp Intensive. Get more details below or apply online.

College Admissions Prep Camp Intensive
The College Admission Prep Camp Intensive (CAPC Intensive) is an 18-day program that prepares students for the increasingly competitive college admissions process by providing expert instruction in SAT prep, college guidance counseling, and personal statement instruction. The residential camp is held on the UC Berkeley campus. At the program students will:

* Gain confidence in their test taking ability through more than 50 hours of Kaplan SAT prep, including 5 full-length practice exams
* Receive expert advice and guidance from two experienced college admission counselors, who will help students create a list of colleges for consideration and a draft of a college application
* Write and revise three personal statement essays that are ready or nearly ready for submission with their applications; our expert writing instructors help students with every step of the writing process

Learn more about CAPC Intensive.

Summer Focus at UC Berkeley
Summer Focus is a six-week long summer program that invites qualified high school students to live and attend classes at UC Berkeley. During the six weeks, students will take one UC Berkeley class for 3-4 units of college credit. In addition, students will take two enrichment courses, taught by Education Unlimited and/or Kaplan faculty. The SAT Prep enrichment course will be provided by Kaplan this summer. Students will receive more than 30 hours of SAT preparation, including 2 full-length practice exams. Learn more about Summer Focus.

SAT/ACT Tips
The SAT is Highly Predictable

Because the format and directions of the SAT remain unchanged from test to test, you can learn the set-up in advance. On the day of the test, the set-up of the Short Reading, Grid-Ins, or other question type shouldn't be new to you.

One of the easiest things you can do to help your performance on the SAT is to understand the directions before taking the test. Since the instructions are always exactly the same, there is no reason to waste your time on the day of the test reading them. Learn them beforehand using a book or practice exam, and skip them during the test.

Although it's deep in the heartland, Macalester's reach is broad, with 1,800 students from 85 countries and all 50 states. Many of the students are exceptionally interested in global issues on this activist campus. Macalester sits a mile east of the Mississippi River in a residential area about four miles from downtown St. Paul, MN, and six miles from Minneapolis. "Being a small and selective liberal-arts college in a big city is attractive," says admissions director Lorne Robinson. "Most colleges of our type tend to be in small towns."

Robinson is most proud of the breadth of the program, unusual in a small college. Macalester offers everything from a neuroscience program, based on biology and psychology courses, to a communications major that includes classes in newswriting, editing, and film analysis. But Robinson also notes that in keeping with Macalester's focus on internationalism, the school offers a geography major. "Americans think geography is just pulling out a map," he says. "But it is a very serious study worldwide, and much more than that. We get into demographics, population trends, statistical analysis, and fieldwork."
